Always Together

Me and my grandfather…

I’m Sofia and I am 14 years old and I’m from Portugal. My grandfather’s name is Jorge and he was born in 1942, which means he will do 72 years old this year. He is a great person. He is sweet, kind and really sensitive. Me and my grandfather have a good relationship. I really like him.

He might have 71, but he continues working because he wants to. My grandfather and my grandmother are the owners of a café. My grandma is 6 years older than my grandpa. They are healthy people. They get up very early to open their café. My grandpa insists to take me and my sisters to school every morning in his car. I think he does that to be closer to us. So I see him every morning before I go to school.

Almost every day, after my classes end up, I went to his café to eat some sweet cakes and, to thank him, I kiss him and hug him. I think he really likes that, because he stays with a big smile and I swear that sometimes I see some tears in his eyes. Like I said before, he’s really sensitive. For example, last year, in the end of my eighth grade, I had excellent marks and when I told him, he was so happy that he started to dropping tears.

Every Wednesday I lunch with my grandparents. In that tiny moment, we eat, we tell jokes, we laugh and tell stories. My grandfather lived, in a particular time, in Angola, Africa. He met there my grandma and they had my father there too. They came to Portugal when my father was just five years old. When they were there, they were owners of a cinema. It’s very curious to know how was everything in that time, so sometimes I ask to my grandfather if he can tell some stories. He doesn’t tell a lot of stories to me, just the special ones. I might have listened a hundred times the same story, but it still sounds fantastic like if it was the first time that I listened that one.

He is always telling me to be a good person, and I always try to do my best… I’m happy to have my special grandpa here with me. He’s not like the others grandfathers, he is different, unique. And that’s why I love him so much.
